Bursaries
French as a Second Language (FSL) Bursaries
Value: $3,000 per student
English-speaking Canadians or permanent residents enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at UBC, with at least 50% of their courses and related activities in French, have an opportunity to receive a $3,000 bursary to perfect their bilingualism while studying in a field of interest. This bursary has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada and is administered by the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC).
Bursary for Post-Secondary Education in French
Value: $625 per semester, up to $1,250 per year, and $5,000 per student
The B.C. Ministry of Education offers bursaries to residents of the province who take at least 55% of their courses in French while pursuing full-time studies at an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada.
Prizes
French for the Future National Essay Contest
Value: $1,000-$20,000
Are you in Grade 10, 11 or 12 and registered in a French program? Do you need a little boost to continue your education in French after high school? Take part in the National Essay Contest for the chance to win a scholarship to UBC ranging between $1,000 and $20,000.

The David E. Highnam Memorial Prize
Value: $1,400*
A prize has been endowed in memory of David E. Highnam by his family, friends and colleagues. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies to a graduating student with the highest overall standing in third and fourth year courses in the French major or honours program (Literature option).
The Joan Livesey Prize in French-Canadian Literature
Value: $500*
As a tribute to her daughter Joan Livesey, deceased August 18, 1973, Adelia Livesey has endowed a prize to be awarded to a graduating student for outstanding work in French-Canadian literature, on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies.
The Mabelle Andison Prize
Value: $300*
As a memorial to Mrs. J.G. Andison and as a tribute to her fine personal qualities and her outstanding service to the community, a prize has been endowed by her friends to be made to a student in the field of French Language and Literature with high scholastic standing and promise.
Prizes of the Ambassador of Switzerland
A book written in the appropriate language by a Swiss author is awarded each year to an outstanding student of French Language and Literature, to a student with high standing in Germanic Studies, and to a student with high standing in Italian.
French, Hispanic and Italian Studies Departmental Book Prizes
The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies awards a number of book prizes to outstanding students who have taken its courses. These awards are made on the recommendation of the department.
Scholarships
The Cervantes Scholarship
Value: $350*
A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student entering the fourth year of an honours or major program in Hispanic Studies with an overall first-class standing in the third year of studies. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies
The C.A. Stuart DeVitt Memorial Scholarship
Value: $26,800*
Scholarships have been endowed by C. Jane DeVitt in memory of her husband, C.A. Stuart DeVitt (BA 1937) for students specialising in Italian or Italian Studies. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies and, in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
The Rachel Giese Memorial Scholarship
Value: $1,000*
The Dante Alighieri Society, on the occasion of the retirement from office of Dr. Rachel Giese, endowed a scholarship for students of Italian descent at UBC. This fund was supplemented at the time of her passing by many of her friends and colleagues. The award has been created to recognize Dr. Giese’s role in the establishment of Italian Studies at UBC as well as in the founding of the Dante Alighieri Society and in the diffusion of Italian cultural values in British Columbia. It is made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies.
The Italian Scholarship
Value: $900*
This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student specializing in Italian Studies.
The Katherine Brearley Scholarship in French
Up to five scholarships of $1,250 every year
A fund has been endowed in memory of Associate Professor Emerita Katherine Brearley (BA’35, MA’39, Doctorat Université de Paris), to support scholarships recognizing outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in the major or honours program in French. A student at UBC in the 1930’s, Katherine returned as a faculty member for 30 years after studying in post-war Paris. She helped many students not only through the courses she taught, but also in her capacity as Assistant Dean of Women and later as the first Senior Faculty Advisor in the Faculty of Arts. After retiring in 1980, she continued to teach French to school-aged children, pursued her passion for water colour painting and wrote children’s stories. Scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies
