Challenge Exams are for students who wish to demonstrate their current proficiency in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, in order to fulfill the Faculty of Arts Language Requirement without needing to take additional UBC language courses.
The Challenge Exam is designed for native and heritage speakers who have grown up speaking the target language, whether they have official study experience or not. The test requires these students to demonstrate their knowledge of all language skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing in specified cultural contexts.
Important
The Challenge Exam is for Arts students who enter the program in 2023/24 or earlier. For students who enter the program in 2024/25 or later please see how you can fulfill the Ways of Knowing Breadth Requirement with FHIS courses.
- Although passing a Challenge Exam will fulfill the Language Requirement, it will not grant you any credits.
- Taking a 300-level or higher course in any of the languages will automatically enable you to fulfill the Language Requirement.
