This undergraduate certificate provides foundational skills and knowledge, both in theory and practice, in the field of translation. It will enhance linguistic and cultural proficiency in French.
Overview
The Undergraduate Certificate in French Translation teaches crucial concepts of translation studies, including neutrality and ethics, which students apply to their translational choices through a process of reflection and contextualization. Students are taught to consider the ethical and professional implications of translation choices in real-life settings.
The certificate provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to integrate a French language credential into their undergraduate program. This certificate program does not qualify as certification for professional translation practice, but will help prepare students who are considering taking a certification exam.
Credits earned in the Undergraduate Certificate in French Translation can be applied towards degree programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and may be applied towards other degree programs at UBC.

Admission
Students currently enrolled in a UBC undergraduate degree program are eligible for admission to the certificate with permission of the program in which they are registered.
In order to be admitted to the program, students must have completed at least FREN_V 402, or demonstrated a proficiency level of B2 at least on the CEFR for Languages1.

Application
Students will normally apply in May for intake into the certificate program in September. Students are encouraged to apply at the end of their second year or earlier if possible.
