Marco A. Schaumloeffel is full-time Affiliate Lecturer and teaches Portuguese, Lusophone Culture and Literature, and Beginner’s Spanish. Previously, he was lecturer in Brazilian Studies at The University of the West Indies, Barbados, and at the University of Ghana. He holds a BA in German and Portuguese (UNISINOS, Brazil), an MA in Linguistics (UFPR, Brazil), and a PhD in Linguistics (UWI, Cave Hill Campus). Apart from several published articles, he is also the author of the first book on the History the Afro-Brazilian returnees to Ghana entitled Tabom, the Afro-Brazilian Community in Ghana (2009), of the Dialectology study on the German Hunsrückisch spoken in Southern Brazil called Interferência do Português em um Dialeto Alemão Falado no Sul do Brasil and is currently researching Creole Languages with focus on the Portuguese origins and influences in Papiamentu, a Caribbean Creole Language mainly spoken in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, comparing it with Papiá Kristang, a nearly extinct Portuguese Creole spoken by a very small community of Portuguese descendants in Malacca, Malaysia. He is translator of several books and can teach Portuguese and German as foreign languages. He is the Chief Examiner for Portuguese for the Caribbean Examinations Council and was Coordinator of the UWI Translation Bureau.
