About

Isabelle Delage-Béland is Assistant Professor of Teaching (French) since July 2023. Before joining UBC in 2020, she has taught several language, grammar, literature, and writing courses in Quebec (at Université de Montréal and Université Laval) and in Ontario (at Brock University). Isabelle holds a Ph.D. in French Studies from Université de Montréal (SSHRC, 2012-2015). From 2018 to 2020, she conducted a postdoctoral research project at Université Laval (FRQSC, 2018-2020). Her research focuses primarily on poetics and history of brief narratives during the Middle Ages (13th-15th century). Entitled Les Fabliaux. Fiction, vraisemblance et genre littéraire, her first monograph was published in 2024 by Éditions Classiques Garnier.

In the Department of French, Hispanic & Italian Studies, she teaches French at various levels. As coordinator of FREN 401 & FREN 402 (Upper-Intermediate French I & II), she enhances connections between language and literature courses, develops materials for French immersion students, and involves students in the creation of experiential learning activities. She is currently leading the Small TLEF project “Modernizing Traditional French Grammar Courses: Towards an Active, Descriptive, and Inclusive Approach for Advanced Students” which aims to redesign FREN 352 and FREN 353 and create original open access materials to better support learners and peers. She also participates in the Large TLEF project “Changing Course: Hybrid Opportunities for Students in French, Hispanic, and Italian Language Programs” led by Luisa Canuto. Furthermore, Isabelle is the Faculty Coordinator of TA Training and Mentoring in FHIS.
