French Language Course Code Changes

To make the sequence of language course progression easier to understand, the following course codes have been changed, as shown in the table below.

These changes will be effective starting the 2021 Summer Terms. Please keep this in mind when registering for your courses.

Old Course Codes New Course Codes CEFR Level *
FREN 111-112 FREN 201-202 A2
FREN 122-123 FREN 301-302 B1
FREN 224-225 FREN 401-402 B2
* Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an internationally recognized guide that is used to grade individuals’ language proficiency. It helps facilitate credit transfers and determine student placement into language courses.

Guidelines

Sequence:

  • The sequence of French language courses FREN 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 401, and 402 is designed for non-native speakers. Students considered native French speakers are those who have been educated in a French speaking country or province, or who were raised in a French-speaking household.
  • UBC’s French language course sequence should be taken in order: FREN 101 then 102, followed by 201 and 202, and so on.

Credits:

  • If you’ve already completed FREN courses under the old course codes, your transcript will not change. The credits you earned will remain lower-level if they were lower-level prior to the renumbering.
  • If you’re in the middle of the Language Track and are progressing to a newly renumbered upper-level FREN course (eg, FREN 401 and 402, previously 224 and 225), you will earn upper-level credit since the course is now being taught as upper-level.
  • Students who are currently majoring or minoring in French, who have taken 300 and 400 upper-level courses along with their prerequisites, may not backtrack to taking FREN 401 and 402 for credits.
  • Students may not repeat equivalent FREN courses to earn upper-level credit (i.e. students with credit for 122 and 123 may not take FREN 301 and 302).

FAQ

A: FREN 112 has been renumbered to FREN 202. So, staring from 2021 Summer, you need to take FREN 202 in order to fulfill the Arts Language Requirement.

A: If you’ve already completed FREN courses under the old course numbers, your transcript will not change. The credits you earned will remain lower-level if they were lower-level prior to the renumbering.

A: If you’re in the middle of the Language Track and are progressing to a newly renumbered upper-level FREN course (eg, FREN 401 and 402, previously 224 and 225), you will earn upper-level credit since the course is now being taught as upper-level. However, if you have already taken upper-level courses that have FREN 301/302 or FREN 401/402 as prerequisites, you cannot go back to take FREN 301/302 or FREN 401/402 for credits.

For example, if you have taken FREN 222, which has FREN 123 (now FREN 301) as a prerequisite, you cannot return to take FREN 301 or 302 for credits. If you have taken FREN 330, which has FREN 224 (now FREN 401) as a prerequisite, you cannot return to take FREN 401 for credits.
