Panelists

Nancy Luo (she/her)

Business Officer at Pacific Economic Development Canada

Bachelor of Arts, Double Major in French and International Relations (2023)

Nancy is a Business Officer at Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan). She graduated from UBC in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and French. During her undergraduate degree, she was always involved in campus life, having served as the President of the International Relations Students’ Association (IRSA) and volunteered as a French tutor at the FHIS Learning Centre. In her current role at PacifiCan, she works with businesses, industry associations, and academic institutions to help grow BC’s economy. She is also a lead on the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative, which provides support and capacity-building to Indigenous clean energy projects. Outside of work, she enjoys skiing on the local mountains, baking sweet treats, and cheering on the Canucks.

Dan Fumano (he/him)

Journalist at The Vancouver Sun and The Province

Bachelor of Arts, Double Major in Spanish and English at UBC (2007); Master’s Degree in Journalism at Ryerson University (2013)

Dan Fumano is an award-winning City Columnist at The Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers, where he has worked since 2013, covering politics, housing, policing, and more. He also worked as a researcher and writer for NBC on the network's coverage of the last eight Olympic Games. Fumano has received Canada's National Newspaper Award and the Jack Webster Award, B.C.'s highest journalism honour, multiple times.

Jennifer Mackenzie (she/her)

Sessional Lecturer of Italian at UBC; Community Instructor; Independent Scholar

Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Italian and Honours in English at UBC (2007); Master of Arts in Italian Studies at UC Berkley (2011); Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies at UC Berkley (2017)

Jennifer is a scholar and instructor of Italian, Italian literature, and Medieval & Renaissance Studies. She was trained at UBC and UC Berkeley, with formative experiences also at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. From 2018 to 2020, she was Assistant Professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania. From 2020 to 2022, she was Assistant Professor in the Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has taught a range of subjects to majors, non-majors, and graduate students: Italian, writing and research, global renaissance studies, topics in intellectual history, and the history of the book. Her published research explores Renaissance controversies around branding, identity, and inheritance, and the legacies of historical postures of impegno or political commitment in modern and contemporary Italy. She stepped off the tenure track in 2022 to start a family in Vancouver and discover humanities work on a local scale.

Sonya Sula (she/her)

Analyst at InterVISTAS Consulting

Bachelor of International Economics & Minor in French (2023)

Sonya is an Analyst at InterVISTAS Consulting, based in Vancouver, where she specializes in accessibility, transportation policy, customer experience, and economic impact. With a passion for barrier-free travel and aviation, Sonya contributes to projects that aim to improve the accessibility of facilities and the overall user experience, primarily at airports. Prior to joining InterVISTAS, Sonya gained experience in the industry working as a Customer Service Agent at Harbour Air Seaplanes. She also completed a co-op term at Transport Canada where she worked as a Financial Assistant on the Accounting Services team.

Alicia Lau (she/her)

Business Analyst at RedMane Technology

Bachelor of Arts, Major in Spanish and Minor in International Relations at UBC (2019); Master of Management at UBC (2020)

Fresh out of university and looking for a place to start, Alicia took on the recommendation from a friend and joined a start-up as an Operations Shift Lead. Nearly two years later, Alicia graduated to becoming a Business Analyst, focused on writing and designing the processes for what is known today as TELUS Health MyCare. Some notable work includes redesigning the procedures which were based on a fee-for-service model to accommodate the, then newly introduced, longitudinal family physician payment model. After spending four years in health-tech, she made the switch to software consulting where she currently focuses on designing case management software for the child welfare of Indigenous groups in Canada.
