Challenge exams are for students who wish to demonstrate their current proficiency in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, in order to fulfill the Faculty of Arts Language Requirement without needing to take additional UBC language courses.

Important note:

Taking a 300-level or higher course in any of the languages will automatically enable you to fulfill the Language Requirement.
Placement tests are typically only necessary when students have acquired some untutored knowledge of the language (through travel, family or non-credit courses) and want to advance to courses for which they do not have official credits or prerequisites.
Language Proficiency Certificates are for students who wish to demonstrate their proficiency in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, in order to go on exchange to another country.
In order to get a Language Proficiency Certificate:
1) Book a language assessment with one of our advisors using this contact form.
2) Download, complete, and save this additional form, and bring it to your language assessment appointment.

- Have attained third-year standing (54 credits completed)
- Have maintained a B+ average
- Have completed FREN 220, FREN 221, FREN 222, and FREN 223
