Get to know Manaal Yasir, who joined the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (FHIS) as the Student Programs Assistant in March 2024 after previously volunteering at the Learning Centre and graduating as an alumna of FHIS.
“I have been connected with FHIS as both a student and employee. Once I graduated, I heard of an opening for the Student Programs Assistant position and decided to apply!”
What is your role as Student Programs Assistant?
As the Student Programs Assistant, my role covers a variety of tasks, but mostly revolves around managing the graduate program and advising and supporting graduate students. I also facilitate most student hiring processes and assist with undergraduate activities from time-to-time.
How have your previous connections with the Department opened doors for you?
I have been connected with FHIS as both a student and employee. I took many FHIS courses and began volunteering at the Department in September 2020 as a French tutor at the Learning Centre. COVID-19 had hit at this time and I remember being quarantined when I conducted my first online session!
After becoming the Learning Centre Assistant in 2022, I had the opportunity to become even more involved through organizing multiple activities and promotional events. These definitely helped open doors for me, because I became more familiar with the people and the inner workings of the Department, which helped me learn and transition into my new role very quickly.
Once I graduated, I heard of an opening for the Student Programs Assistant position and decided to apply! With my previous experiences within the Department, it seemed the next step up for me and a natural transition.
What is your favourite part about working at FHIS?
My favourite part about working at FHIS has been the opportunity to hear different languages spoken around me. I like learning new words from the faculty members, students and staff around me to brush up on my language skills and find how these words connect us on an intuitive level.
What advice would you give to new graduates?
Finding your path after graduation can be tough waters to navigate and it takes a lot of patience, persistence and kindness towards yourself, so be prepared for that.
Unemployment (short-term) can be good! You can take this time to reflect on your goals and work towards them, as well as learn more about the kind of person you are during a crisis and how you can be better.
Professionally: networking, cold calling people, attending job fairs and keeping in touch with places you would like to work would be the way to go! Don’t be afraid to ask people for help and feedback, especially with resumes, cover letters and interviews you have done. Finally, keep faith; your big breakthrough is just around the corner.
What do you do for fun on your spare time?
In my spare time, I like to explore theatre and cinema in Vancouver as well practice Mixed Martial Arts. I am learning Muay Thai at the moment and find being beat up by opponents stronger than me a productive use of my time. I also love trying out new hotpot places. Haidilao has been my reigning champion for a year now, but I am also open to suggestions!
