Dr. Gaoheng Zhang is looking to hire two undergraduate students to serve as research assistants for the current semester (Winter 2017) with funding from the Arts Undergraduate Research Awards and the Arts Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Awards. For more information on these programs, see http://students.arts.ubc.ca/involvement/research-in-arts/.
What are the awards for?
The awardees will assist Dr. Zhang on his book project titled “Mobilities Between Italy and China: Exile, Colonialism, Tourism, and Migration.” This interdisciplinary project will examine the intercultural exchanges between the two countries via various forms of mobility.
Specific duties may include the following: compile a bibliography; write summaries of key articles and books; research online databases of archives located in Italy, China, and North America for primary materials; contact archives to arrange visits; add new materials to a website (https://mobilitiesitalychina.wordpress.com/); translations; photocopying and scanning.
This is a good opportunity for students to develop skills in preparation for graduate coursework and research-oriented jobs in governmental and non-profit organizations. In particular, Dr. Zhang is looking for students who are advanced-level or proficient speakers in Italian or Mandarin Chinese (but this is not a mandatory requirement). Students from all disciplines are welcome to submit an application.
What is the award value?
1) Arts Undergraduate Research Awards: $3,000, paid between February and August 2017;
2) Arts Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Awards: $4,500, paid between April and August 2017.
The rate aligns with UBC standards at $16.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay (as U/G Research Assistants).
How to apply?
Please send:
1) a paragraph in which you explain your motivations and qualifications (mention language proficiency) to work on this project;
2) a sample of your best writing, such as a term paper;
3) indicate for which of the two awards you’re applying.
Please apply before January 27, 2017 by sending these documents to gaoheng.zhang@ubc.ca.
