As a third year student of French, Jory Smallenberg was recently awarded a Premier Undergraduate and Wesbrook Scholarship, receiving the Sherwood Lett Memorial Award. Each year, Wesbrook scholarships are awarded to senior students from all Faculties who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, innovative leadership, and involvement in student and community activities. This spring, Jory was recognized by President Martha Piper and selected amongst candidates from all Faculties for her scholastic and literary achievement, interest in sports, personal character, and ability to serve, work with, and lead others. As an instrumental founder of UBC Refugee Relief and the British Columbia Schools of Character movement, Jory has engaged with thousands of students both on and off campus to promote social justice, integrity and character. She has planned fundraising events to privately sponsor a refugee family, and volunteers with French Immersion students of all ages in her spare time. We are proud to recognize Jory Smallenberg as the candidate who most fully displays the qualities of the late Sherwood Lett, and look forward to her continued involvement as a student of French at UBC.
