“Best Essay” awarded to two FHIS students by the Canadian Association of Hispanists

Two UBC students from the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies were awarded “Best Essay” by the Canadian Association of Hispanists (Asociación Canadiense de Hispanistas) at their annual conference on June 7th, 2019.

Best Graduate Essay:

Second time winner, Jennifer Nagtegaal, received the Premio de la Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos al mejor ensayo estudiantil de posgrado for her essay titled “Towards a Definition of Picaresque Drawing: the Comic Adaptation of El Guitón Honofre.”

Best Undergraduate Essay:

Laurel Neufeld received the Premio Nela Río del Registro Creativo al mejor ensayo estudiantil de primer ciclo for her essay titled “Un príncipe de Navidad – ¿y de la Mancha?”

Both essays were originally written for graduate and undergraduate courses taught by Dr. Raúl Álvarez Moreno, Associate Professor in Hispanic Studies.

“I believe these awards really reflect the quality of teaching and mentorship in our department,” states Jennifer Nagtegaal.

“I have certainly benefited immensely from the careful and critical feedback Raúl has provided on class assignments, as well as his willingness to provide feedback on other projects beyond the classes he offers.”
