Upper Intermediate Spanish I
SPAN 401 es una introducción intensamente práctica al arte y a la destreza de la mediación, interpretación y de destrezas metalingüísticas por medio de la traducción inglés al español y del español al inglés, con especial énfasis en la escritura en español y la escritura creativa como forma de apropiación avanzada de la lengua.
A través de una variedad de actividades de distintos campos profesionales (Ios negocios, la salud, las leyes -textos legales-, la educación, el periodismo, las relaciones públicas, los estudios literarios y culturales) los estudiantes trabajarán con teorías y técnicas de traducción, intersecciones (o divergencias) gramaticales y estructurales entre las dos lenguas, y tratarán de resolver cuestiones de fidelidad y fluidez al interpretar voz, cultura y texto.
Además, los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de aplicar los conocimientos en situaciones concretas participando activamente en la traducción y preparación de materiales para organizaciones vinculadas con la comunidad hispana a través de Spanish for Community y a través de invitados que les permitirán conocer con mayor profundidad los retos y posibilidades del área de la traducción, interpretación y creación literaria.
Finalmente, los estudiantes mejorarán sus destrezas y fluidez en la escritura, oralidad y comprensión general del español a través del proceso de traducción y escritura creativa.
Los participantes deben tener un conocimiento alcanzado de ambas lenguas (el español y el inglés).
SPAN401 is an intensely practical introduction to the art and skill of mediation, interpretation, and metalinguistic skills through the translation of both English to Spanish and Spanish to English, with a special emphasis on written Spanish and creative writing as a form of advanced appropriation of the language.
Through a variety of activities from different professional specializations (Business, Health, Education, Journalism, Public Relations, and Literary and Cultural Studies), students will work through translation theories and techniques, grammatical and structural overlaps (or divergences) between Spanish and English, and grapple with questions of fidelity and fluidity when interpreting voice, culture, and text.
Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge by actively participating in concrete projects involving translation and adaptation of materials for the Hispanic community through Spanish for Community and their partners, as well as through guests who will allow them to learn more about the challenges and possibilities of the area of translation, interpretation and literary creation.
Ultimately, students will improve their writing skills and fluency in Spanish and overall understanding of the language through the translation process and creative writing.
Participants must be highly proficient in both Spanish and English.
