The Commodification of Emotions: AI and the (Dis)Embodiment in Interpreting

DATE
Wednesday February 4, 2026
TIME
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Presented by Irem Ayan, Assistant Professor of French and Romance Studies (UBC FHIS)

About the talk:

The task of translating and, even more so, interpreting puts the body of the translator and interpreter center stage. This talk delves into the interpreter’s “professional body” and what it means to suppress emotions in the act of interpreting, even if—or, especially when—the content to be interpreted is a question of life and death. This talks focuses on the interpreter’s body as a site of analysis to offer a critical frame for reflecting on the embodied demands of the profession, in particular in times of AI, when “bodies” have all-too-often become problems to be solved or eliminated.

This event will take place in English.
