Make Community Connections! Reading Week 2018 Projects for French, Hispanic, Italian Studies students

Looking for a break from the books this Reading Break? A 3-day project with an elementary school or non-profit organization can enable you to work in group settings, learn more about community issues, apply your academics in the real world, build lasting connections, and make a difference. Projects are from February 19th – 23rd, and there is a placement to match your interests and career goals.

Queen Alexandra Elementary invites you to support and lead interactive projects throughout the entire school exploring themes around Aboriginal culture, environmental issues, science, and outdoor education. As a volunteer, you will work closely with students from one classroom (or group of classrooms) facilitating fun project activities using integrated arts, science, and social sciences. Over three days, you will work closely with the Queen Alexandra students and help them with their particular activities which may include field trips, lesson plans, art, drama, and physical exercise. This year the activities and projects will explore themes such as Aboriginal culture, climate change and ecology, science, and outdoor education.
By the end of the three days, Queen Alexandra students will have built positive relationships with you and be open to future possibilities for themselves.

Mount Pleasant Elementary – Mount Pleasant Elementary students (kindergarten to grade 7) will travel from station to station working and engaging with UBC volunteers to experience hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and/or mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.). The focus is not on a finished product, but on learning and using the skills of communication, digital literacy, team work, emotional intelligence, global citizenship, entrepreneurship, leadership and problem solving.
