Curious about pursuing a career in Translation or Interpretation?

UBC’s Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (FHIS) invites all undergraduate and graduate students of French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romance Studies to attend a presentation by Young Joe, a representative from the Society of Translators and Interpreters of BC (STIBC).

The presentation will provide a brief overview of various fields related to Translation, Community Interpreting, Medical Interpreting, Court Interpreting, and Conference Interpreting in BC and Canada. You will learn about basic requirements, certifications, and timelines needed, as well as examples from actual certification exams, so that you can see what kind of texts are used in written and oral exams, etc. A Q&A session will follow. The presenters may also be able to answer inquiries related to these fields elsewhere, such as the US, EU, and Australia.

Schedule:

  • 4:00-4:40 PM – Presentation
  • 4:40-5:00 PM – Q&A

Light refreshments and beverages will be served.

Young Joe has worked as a professional interpreter since 2004, primarily in healthcare, legal and community. Before she became the first Certified Medical Interpreter in Canada in 2016, she earned her master’s degrees in Translation & Interpreting and in International Relations from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia in 2008. As an enthusiastic interpreting trainer, she teaches interpreting skills at Simon Fraser University and The Interpreter's Lab in English to students with all the language combinations. She also used to teach interpreting and translation at UBC and Vancouver Community College and also developed their curriculum as well. Young Joe is an avid rock-climber, so you will find her on rocks in Squamish on weekends.

The Society of Translators and Interpreters of BC (STIBC) is a not-for-profit organization affiliated to the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC), the umbrella organization for the associations of translators and interpreters across the country. STIBC partners with CTTIC to offer a process for certification that is recognized by all provincial translation societies and associations in Canada.
