Zachary Gaouad, MA student of French Studies, contributed to an international reporting project that aired on PBS News, offering insight into how social media is shaping global migration journeys.
A new report produced by students in UBC’s Global Reporting Program—including FHIS graduate student Zachary Gaouad—examines the growing influence of social media on migration.
Featured on PBS News, the story examines how platforms like Facebook and TikTok are influencing migrants to undertake dangerous journeys in search of a better life—often based on misleading or incomplete information.
This project is part of the Graduate Certificate in Migration Studies, through which student journalists conducted fieldwork across multiple regions: Morocco and Spain; Estonia and Lithuania; and the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Graduate students in French or Hispanic Studies are invited to consider pursuing this certificate as a complement to their current studies.
This feature underscores the real-world impact of humanities training: equipping students not only to analyze global issues, but to tell stories that shape public understanding about lived realities.
