Join Indigenous writers from the Araucania in Chile for an afternoon of poetry reading in the Mapuzugun and Spanish languages\, with English translations provided by students.

Spanish for Community presents a community celebration of the project Palabras Madre/Mother Words \ , an evening honouring Indigenous writers from the Araucania in Chile\, and the principle of reciprocity through poetry reading in Mapuzugun and Spani sh. The English translation will be provided by students from SPAN 301.

This is a community based project in partnership with the Department of Language\, Literature and Communication and the Indigenous Studies Institut e of the Universidad de la Frontera (Temuco\, Chile).

Open to all mem bers of the UBC community.

Jacqueline Margarita CaniguanWe have the honour of receiving Jacqueline Marg arita Caniguan\, Mapuche poet\, linguist\, professor and Indigenou s activist\, who will read her poems from her anthology Wallmapu i n both Mapuzugun and Spanish. She is partnering with Spanish for Community as the language and culture specialist.

Opening remarks:

D ebra Sparrow ProfileSpecial guest Debra Sparro w of the Musqueam Nation will be opening the event. Debra Sparrow was born and raised on the Musqueam Indian Reserve. An acclaimed weaver\, Debra has been deeply involved with the revival of the Musqueam weaving tradition for more than 30 years\, acknowledging the visual culture of the people whose unceded territory viewers are on. Her artwork is exhibited nationally and i nternationally\, including the Museum of Anthropology at UBC\, Vancouver In ternational Airport\, the Royal BC Museum\, the Canadian Museum of History\ , the Burke Museum in Seattle\, and the Smithsonian.
