 <p>The Age of Enlightenment was a turning point in the history of the deaf.
  The late eighteenth century was marked by the work of Abbé de L’Épée and t
 he invention of a method that made it possible for the first time to teach 
 French to deaf people using their natural language: gesture. In this lectur
 e\, I will show that this new knowledge was built from the grammatical\, rh
 etorical\, and aesthetic reflections of the Enlightenment philosophy on the
  relationship between the French language and the image. Not only did the A
 ge of Enlightenment witness the emergence of sign linguistics\, but it also
  redefined deafness as a unique perspective on language and the world\, as
