d Wengrow propose a bold reexamination of humanity's history\, challenging
the conventional narrative surrounding the origins of social inequality. Ce
ntral to their thesis is the idea that 18th-century Enlightenment philosoph
ers were significantly influenced by an "indigenous critique" arising in No
rth America—a perspective that\, they argue\, has been largely overlooked b
y mainstream Enlightenment historiography. While their work has sparked obj
ections from critics and historians on several fronts\, it has also garnere
d considerable enthusiasm\, reigniting public debate about 18th-century lit
erature and intellectual history. In this talk\, Joël Castonguay-Bélanger w
ill discuss these polarized reactions and their implications for understand
