  brings together three scholars from across the Department of French\, Hisp
 anic and Italian Studies (FHIS)—Tamara Mitchell (Assistant Professor of Spa
 nish)\, Tesi Aguirre (PhD Student in Spanish) and Katharina Piechocki (Asso
 ciate Professor of French and Romance Studies)—to talk about the ways we do
 \, approach and conduct research. Designed as an open conversation\, this s
 eminar starts from the premise that we do not talk enough about the nitty-g
 ritty\, the pedestrian side of our research—no matter if we’re students or 
 faculty. This seminar\, then\, inquires about the minutiae of the research 
 process:</p><ul><li>What exactly do we do when we “do research”?</li><li>Ho
 w do we start a research project\, and what exactly drives us?</li><li>What
  is our point of departure and how do we proceed from there?</li><li>What d
 o we do when we struggle?</li><li>How do we work across languages and disci
 plines?</li><li>To what degree does contingency\, serendipity and marketabi
 lity play a role in the shaping of our research project?</li><li>How do we 
 embark on collaborative projects?</li></ul><p>This seminar wants to stimula
 te an open conversation with the audience by offering three distinct perspe
 ctives to these questions.</p><p>The event will be held in English.</p><p><

 ta-end="327">Hosted by the Department of French\, Hispanic and Italian Stud
 ies (FHIS) and open to the entire UBC community\, the FHIS Research Seminar
  is a forum for sharing the latest research related to French\, Spanish\, I
 talian\, Portuguese\, and Romance Studies. Each seminar involves thought-pr
 ovoking presentations by guest speakers\, faculty members\, and graduate st
