About the talk: 

The Spanish Civil War was much more than a mere civil war a mong Spaniards. Framed within the growing international crisis of the inter war period\, it was an international war by proxy\, consciously planned and contained within Spain's borders. The Spanish Civil War undoubtedly consti tutes the pivotal event of a "long 20th century in Spain." Today\, 90 years after the start of the conflict (and 95 years after the proclamation of th e Second Republic)\, the controversies have been far from abating\; quite t he contrary. Disputes surrounding historical reconstruction and memorializa tion are ever-present in the country's political and sociocultural arena\, as well as in private lives. Within this framework\, this seminar will anal yze the different phases of the Spanish Civil War (including its antecedent s and consequences)\, maintaining a constant balance between the Spanish co ntext and the international framework that surrounded and\, often\, determi ned it. The war of 1936-1939 is\, for Spain\, a past that refuses to fade.< /p>
