This course is mandatory for all MA students who will/might pursue a thesis and for all incoming PhD students (who have not taken the Proseminar before). The course is optional for all other graduate students.
This initiative is intended to support FHIS graduate students in becoming independent scholars, ready to make an original contribution to their field.
The focus will be three-fold:
- Research methodology (formulating research questions, developing a thesis project, using library resources and digital tools, etc.)
- Research dissemination (publishing for scholarly and general audiences, submitting a paper proposal, presenting at academic conferences, etc.)
- Professional development (writing a grant application, creating a teaching portfolio, exploring the job market and career opportunities in the humanities, etc.).
Throughout the academic year, various graduate students, faculty members, and guest speakers will be invited to talk about a recent publication or a work in progress, share their research strategies and methods, and/or discuss current issues and debates in their discipline.
At the end of Term 2, a Graduate Student Symposium will offer all graduate students the opportunity to present their research to their peers and faculty members.
