Placement Tests for French

1- Guidelines and Placement Test for French 222-223:

French 222 – 223 are designed to accommodate different levels of student ability. The FREN 222/223 test is recommended also for students unsure of whether their language level is sufficient for the literature courses, FREN 220/221.

To take the online test:
1– Log in the UBC online Learning Management System  Connect
2– You must self-enroll in the course where the Placement Test is available. Click here for instructions to access the online placement test.

2- Guidelines and Placement Test for French 122-123:

FREN 122 and123 together are the normal transitional courses for students who wish to continue with post-secondary coursework  in French:

  • after completing twelfth-grade French (French 12, French 30, Core French) with at least a B+ standing
  • after completing French Immersion 12 with an average mark (Those with high academic standing should take the transition courses expressly designed for them – FREN 224 and 225 – if they can fit them into their timetable)
  • after completing AP or Higher-Level IB French with a mark too low to earn transfer credit (Students earning this transfer credit will have met the prerequisite for any of FREN 215, 220, 221 or 222)
  • after completing UBC’s FREN 112 with a standing of at least B+

Although the department does not offer remedial courses, students in the above categories who feel unsure of their readiness for FREN 122 are still welcome to write the FREN 122/123 Placement Test, since it will give them, in advance, some idea of how challenging these courses will be. On the other hand, confident students who feel prepared for coursework at a higher level than they are nominally qualified for should write the test appropriate to the course that they wish to take (usually the FREN 222/223 Test), or they should consult an adviser.
